Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A. My name is Daniela Fuentes Pereira, I’m from Chillán, I’m 37 years old, and I’m an English teacher by profession. I’m an animal lover, so I have three furry friends. I also love traveling, but I confess that I enjoy being in my own space and cherishing moments with myself.

Q. What do you currently do for a living?

At the moment, I’m doing many things, and when I say many, I truly mean it. But the best part is that I enjoy them all.

To start, I have an online English school called Cosy English, where I teach English to adults with a communicative focus. The levels range from beginner A1 to intermediate B2. I offer both group classes and one-on-one sessions. I dedicate approximately 10 hours per week to the school. I genuinely enjoy teaching adults. In our classes, we always have fun in a relaxed and dynamic environment.

I also work for a purpose-driven travel agency called R3viajar, which allows me to travel and explore incredible places. I travel as a Tour Leader, and when I’m working from home, I handle accounts. In June, I went to Rome, Bethlehem, Petra, and Jerusalem, and it was all incredibly beautiful. These places have such powerful energy that it’s truly overwhelming to experience them.

As a third activity, I work for a private organic certification company, providing English training to their employees.

And lastly, I work for a South African digital and financial solutions company as a tester for online casino websites. I have to verify that everything functions properly, as if I were a player. It’s entertaining because sometimes I get to play and test certain additions, from new games to new payment methods. The latter can be less entertaining but still interesting. The last time, I had to make a deposit with cryptocurrency (what???). That’s exactly what I thought when I read the email. It felt like reading Chinese to me, but I managed to do it and send them what they requested. This job is full of challenges, and what I enjoy the most is that I’m always learning something new. How did I get this job? In my twenties, I worked for three years on cruise ships, and I made many friendships there. One of them settled in South Africa, and when I was laid off from my previous job, she contacted me offering this remote position. What could be better? I accepted it with open arms, not knowing much about the field, but having a good command of English was enough.

As for hobbies (very important)

I’m taking piano lessons, and I’m also training at a School of Solar Alchemists. Now, I want to get back to the gym. It’s important to mention hobbies because sometimes we forget to pamper ourselves, and it’s a good way to release stress.

Q. What was your main motivation to start your own business?

A. My online English school, Cosy English, is my baby. It’s the most beautiful and long-lasting venture I’ve had. It started in the second half of the pandemic. I was part of a mass layoff, and just two months before that, I had received my house and had taken out a loan for a gate, garage, etc. So, facing that whole process was very stressful and everything happened very quickly. However, within a month of being laid off, I had set up the school. Initially, it started as an English workshop idea for children, but the interested individuals who were inquiring were adults. So, I carefully analyzed the market, my experience, and things naturally flowed from there. When faced with involuntary changes, most of the time, you want to do something different, but within a very short period. That meant more work. If my experience was with adults (since my previous job was in higher education), starting with children would mean starting from scratch, creating new materials, programs, etc. That’s when I realized I should follow the path I wanted, as long as my heart also wanted it. I took a course to better guide myself on this path to independence, and it was at that moment that I designed the entire school based on what I believe is a priority in my life, and in this case, it was my freedom. Freedom to choose my students, schedules, how much I wanted to earn, and how many hours I wanted to work. Things started falling into place, and now my initial motivation was born out of necessity, but my motivation in what I do always revolves around the value of freedom, and you have no idea how much happiness that brings me.

Q. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as an independent entrepreneur?

A. I think one of the biggest challenges is overcoming the fear and uncertainty of whether the project will be sustainable in the long run. Achieving stability as an independent entrepreneur is the most complex aspect to face, but time and experience teach you and prepare you for everything.

Q. When traveling, what are your must-haves?

A. I always carry my facial sunscreen, lip balm, cellphone, power bank, headphones, a book, a set of energizing oils, calming oils, etc., depending on the need. And now, of course, it’s my Mochis Bag. During the trip I took in June, it was perfect even though I used it a lot. My Mochis Bag remained in perfect condition, especially in Petra, where we had to walk quite a bit. Carrying water bottles was so convenient. Moreover, it’s lightweight, so my back can endure much more, making every walk and journey very enjoyable.

Q. What advice would you give to other women who want to follow in your footsteps or reach where you are?

A. Do things with awareness of your own interests and goals. Don’t let fear or the unknown limit your opportunities. If you don’t know English, take a course, study it, practice it. If you need to know more about marketing, take a course. If you start a business, learn more about it. Surround yourself with people in the same field who are good and inspiring. They are always a great source of inspiration and experience, hence learning opportunities. Be the architect of your own life, always designing it based on what your heart and mind desire. Don’t lose focus and always make time to do things you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, knitting, cooking, yoga, or whatever you like.

My driving force is my freedom. What drives you? Do you know? Maybe you have to start there. Self-awareness is essential. If you don’t know what you want, you won’t be able to design your life in a healthy way with the well-being you deserve. Always start with yourself.

Welcome to the journey!
